The Moon has been a source of inspiration for humanity since the dawn of time; this natural satellite controls the tides, weather, and countless other phenomena all over the world.

As the Moon orbits Earth, it changes appearance based on the amount of sunlight it reflects (these different appearances are called 'phases'). The Moon cycles through phases every month; many calendars and biological cycles are dictated by this lunar cycle. The Moon is also tidally locked; the Dark Side of the Moon is eternally facing away from the Earth.

In mythology, the Moon is often a feminine deity (although not always) and is paired with a corresponding Sun deity. The Moon represents spirituality, mysteries, secrets, and the afterlife, among many other things. It would be easier to list what the Moon isn't associated with!

The Moon has many features on it's surface, including the prominent Lunar Mare. In antiquity, these features were thought to be liquid oceans by early astronomers. There are several Mare, including Nectaris, Nubium, and Crisium.
